AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for August 2 to August 8, 2021

Heatwave to give way to cooler temperatures and some rain

Mark Ingalls, AgWeatherNet Intern

Synopsis:

Hot, mostly sunny, and widespread smoky skies are forecast to start the week under an upper level high centered over the Great Basin. Wednesday, two upper level lows approach the Pacific Northwest to bring a stark cool down and chances of rain for much of Washington for Wednesday night through Friday. They are also expected to clear out most of the smoke (except near major fires). Cooler temperatures remain in place through the weekend.

Discussion:

Generally mostly sunny skies are forecast throughout Washington during the first half of the week but areas of thick smoke are likely to obscure it – especially east of the Cascades. An upper level high pressure system centered over the Great Basin will be responsible for a heatwave through Wednesday with highs above 100 in the Columbia Basin and as high as 90 in the Southwest Interior. The smoke may be enough to keep highs in the hottest areas from reaching 105, but not enough to stop the heat altogether.

Wednesday afternoon, a low approaches the region from the southwest to bring a chance of showers and thunderstorms to southeastern mountains Wednesday night. At the same time, a stronger low is forecast to move in from the northwest to bring a chance of showers to the northwestern quarter of Washington.

Thursday afternoon, the low from the southwest will be out of the region, leaving the low from the northwest as the dominant weather pattern in the Pacific Northwest. This will keep a chance of showers in place for most of the state through Friday. The highest chances of rain will be in the mountains and west of the Cascades. In these locations, a few leftover showers may last into Saturday. Once those are gone, look for mostly sunny skies and seasonably cool temperatures to end the weekend.
