AgWeatherNet Weekly Outlook for June 04 to June 10, 2021

Cooler temperatures for the coming week as the heatwave draws to a close

Mark Ingalls, AgWeatherNet Intern

Synopsis:

Breezy areas and much cooler temperatures are expected over the weekend with showers possible in the mountains and western half of the state. Some showers continue to be possible in both areas through midweek, but with precipitation chances gradually declining beyond Sunday. In Eastern Washington lowlands, dry conditions will reign during the forecast period with locally breezy spots through midweek thanks to the continued unsettled pattern.

Discussion:

The upper level ridge that produced this week's heatwave is deteriorating as a broad upper level trough dips southwestward from the Gulf of Alaska. This is resulting in cooler temperatures and breezy conditions in most of Washington Friday. A cold front Saturday will add rain showers to the mix, mainly in the mountains and western half of the state while keeping wind speeds elevated in typical windy spots. Most of the Eastern Washington lowlands should remain dry during the weekend.

Shower activity is forecast to remain in place in the mountains and Western Washington through midweek with chances gradually decreasing beyond Sunday. The orientation of the trough may turn upper level flow to out of the southwest Tuesday and Wednesday to warm temperatures up by a few degrees statewide. This may also inject some energy to produce isolated thunderstorms in Eastern Washington mountains and on the Palouse, but with low dew points these aren't expected to be widespread.

The Western US drought continues to spread into Washington. This week's Drought Monitor update from the National Drought Mitigation Center, severe drought (D2/4) was noted to have spread into much of the Palouse and the Spokane area with moderate drought (D1/4) has spread to include all of Eastern Washington not marked as being under a more severe form of drought. No major change was noted in Western Washington. Rain over the weekend and into next week may provide temporary relief in the southwestern quarter of the state, but it is not likely enough to bring long-term improvements.
