AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for October 21 to October 27, 2017

Stormy This Weekend; Calmer Early Next Week

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

A major storm looks to bring strong winds and heavy rain to much of the region this weekend, along with notable night-time warming from Saturday night into Sunday morning. Rain should rapidly spread eastward on Saturday morning, but may then taper off on Saturday night in central areas, and on Sunday morning in eastern Washington. Western locales could maintain wet weather for a longer duration, though drying is anticipated to occur later on Sunday. Although Saturday may begin on a calm note for certain areas east of the Cascades, strong, gusty winds will be increasing during the day, and will likely persist well into Sunday.

For early next week, much calmer weather is likely, with mild, pleasant days and cool nights. In such a pattern, morning fog should be the main potential concern at that time. It appears that a clipper-type system will traverse the region on Wednesday, although its influence is expected to be modest compared to this weekend's storm. Clouds and even light western rain are possible, although increasing wind is forecast to be the predominant feature of note. Variable weather seems likely to continue later in the period, as high pressure attempts to rebuild across the Northwest. Overall, a dynamic and changeable weather interval is expected in the coming days, with impactful weather likely this weekend.

Here are the key points:

  • Widespread rain this weekend, with heavy totals in the west and especially in the mountains
  • Mountain snow on Saturday morning
  • Very windy at times this weekend
  • Cool on Saturday morning, and then significant warming by Saturday night and especially Sunday
  • Calmer, drier, and more benign weather early next week
  • Weak storm possible on Wednesday

    • Temperatures
      • Cool on Saturday morning, and then much warmer by Sunday morning.
      • Warmer days into early next week, and then possibly cooler late in the period.

      Precipitation
      • Heavy western rain this weekend.
      • Rain in eastern Washington, and rain likely for central Washington through Saturday night.
      • A slight chance of mainly western rain around Wednesday.

      Wind
      • Very windy this weekend.
      • Lighter early next week, and then breezy to perhaps windy on Wednesday.

      8 to 14 Day Outlook - October 28, 2017 to November 3, 2017
      • Overall, near to above average temperatures and near to below average precipitation are expected during the 8 to 14 day time frame.

      Frost Risk Summary
      • This Weekend: Moderate risk on Saturday morning, except low in western areas, and low risk on Sunday morning.
      • Next Week: Low to moderate risk early, and moderate to perhaps high risk later in the week.

Long Range Discussion / Seasonal (Winter) Outlook

The trend toward an increasingly wintry outlook continues, as a weak La Niña is apparently trying to develop. Still, overall odds remain very modest at this point, and are only slightly tilted toward relatively cool and wet conditions for the 2017/2018 winter season.
