AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for January 7 to January 13, 2017

Active and Milder Weather Arrives This Weekend; Possibly Cooler Later Next Week

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

The meeting of an incoming mild and moist storm system with the cold, dry air mass that presently resides over Washington should result in a variety of winter weather later this weekend. Precipitation may briefly start as light snow or a mix in western areas on Saturday before transitioning to steadier rainfall on Sunday. For areas east of the Cascades, light snow is possible later on Saturday, with heavier precipitation likely to develop on Sunday, as snow changes to sleet or freezing rain and eventually to rain for some locations. Total precipitation amounts and types remain in question, but some areas could see eventful and wintry conditions on Sunday.

Certain regions could experience impactful winter weather including several inches of snow or modest ice accumulations, while other parts of central and eastern Washington may receive less precipitation or a quicker change to rain. Along with the typical north-south temperature gradient, locales near the Cascade east slopes like Omak, Wenatchee, and perhaps even Yakima will likely maintain cold air and wintry precipitation for a relatively longer duration.

Next week looks to be variable and possibly stormy, with periodic opportunities for wind, precipitation, and mountain snowfall. Specifically, periodic western rainfall is expected, along with a mixed bag of precipitation at times east of the Cascades. There is also some indication that another chilly air mass will attempt to infiltrate the state later in the week, as additional arctic air pools north of the border. Whether or not it interacts with any systems later in the period will determine if there is another winter storm or snow event later in the period. Overall, active and changeable weather is likely in the coming days, which seems very appropriate for early to mid January.
