AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for August 6 to August 12, 2016

Becoming Cooler and Unsettled by Monday; Warmer and Drier Later Next Week

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

This summer's theme of Washington as a climate battle zone looks to continue in the coming days, as strong cooling early next week shifts toward strong warming later in the period. The main driver of the upcoming weather variability should be a low pressure area that will slowly meander in from the north this weekend, before wobbling around the Northwest early next week, and eventually weakening and departing the region later in the period. Although confidence is high in this general progression, the interesting weather lies in the details of the pattern, which remain a source of uncertainty at present.

If the low remains north of the region, generally drier conditions are favored, although isolated showers would be likely for some western and northern areas. If the low ultimately drops south of the state, more widespread showers or even some thunderstorms may be expected. In fact, since the north edge of a low pressure center tends to be the wet side, a period of steady rain could occur for some locations in this (less likely) scenario. Right now, it seems that the low will drop over central Washington, meaning that south central areas could stay mostly dry, while other northern areas may be showery at times. Aside from the critical track of the low, the other important issue to watch is the duration of its stay. Some forecast models show the system as being progressive, and rather quickly exiting the area, while others show the low lingering through mid week. In any case, relatively warm, dry, and calm weather early and late in the period should be separated by a rather unsettled spell of cooler, wetter, and breezier conditions early next week. However, at this time, exactly how the low will behave is quite literally up in the air.
