AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for July 16 to July 22, 2016

A Chance of Showers on Monday Morning; Seasonally Warm Through the Period

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

As we enter the (climatologically) hottest time of the year from now through early August, predictably warm weather is expected for the next seven days, along with fairly dry conditions. The most interesting feature is a disturbance that should pass through Washington on Sunday night and Monday, and may trigger some clouds and breezes, a few showers, and even a slight chance of isolated thunderstorms. Otherwise, following a warm but pleasant weekend, next week looks to be rather variable, as a trough off the coast battles with a ridge over the central US. There is likely to be a large east to west temperature gradient across the Cascades as well. In general, after a balmy Monday morning, the trend should be from cooler to warmer later in the period.

Overall, the global atmospheric circulation is quite different now than it often has been during recent years. Rather than being centered over the Northwest next week, large and hot ridges of high pressure are predicted to be located over the central US and south of the Aleutian Islands in the Pacific Ocean, with Washington wedged in the middle. Temperatures will also be unseasonably low in the high latitude areas well north of Washington. It may not be cool for us in the coming days, but at least the atmospheric setup has changed from the recent monster ridge pattern, and at this point, anything different is good.
