AgWeatherNet Weekly Weather Outlook for May 14 to May 20, 2016

Variable and Unsettled Weather For Mid May

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

Given the recent warmth and associated rapid melting of the mountain snowpack, it seemed that an early wildfire season could have been just around the corner. Luckily, the upcoming weather pattern should delay that unpleasant prospect for at least another week. As several low pressure systems move through the region in the coming seven days, the result will be near normal temperatures and variably unsettled conditions. Of particular note is the possibility for significant rainfall on Saturday night and Sunday morning in normally dry south central Washington. Although the climate is generally arid in places like Yakima, a low pressure system passing to the south could bring wet weather this weekend. The details of such events are notoriously difficult to predict, and there may be a strong spatial gradient between areas with no rainfall and appreciable quantities. In any case, the increasing moisture levels will hopefully provide some folks with a temporary respite from the constant moving of sprinklers. A warm Saturday is likely to give way to cooler conditions on Sunday. Early next week, somewhat drier weather is expected to return, as days warm up and nights cool down. As another low pressure area approaches the state later in the period, a transition to cooler days and cloudier conditions is anticipated.
