Stormy with Wind and Western Rain This Weekend; Cool and Unsettled Next Week

A weather pattern change had to happen sometime, and that sometime is now. Rain is not always welcome in western Washington, but I suspect that it will be this weekend. After a long dry spell, folks west of the Cascades can expect pennies from heaven on Saturday, and lots of them. More than one inch should fall in some areas. Unfortunately, drier conditions are likely east of the Cascades, with potentially no rain falling from the Columbia Basin and points to the south and east. However, wind should be an issue over much of the state, with blowing dust in the drier areas. Sustained values could reach 20 to 30 mph, with gusts to around 50 mph. Hopefully at least light rain will fall onto the major wildfires in north central and northeast Washington before and perhaps during the strong winds. Otherwise, the wind could make the fires and attendant smoke production even worse in the long run. However, the cooler temperatures and higher humidity will be a positive development. As Pacific air rushes through Washington, the air quality will mercifully improve, although the change may be temporary unless the active fires across the Northwest can be controlled. While the transition may seem rather stark, this weather is hardly unprecedented for this time of year.

Next week, cool and periodically unsettled weather is expected to continue, with western showers and eastern breezes at times. Mt. Rainier and other high peaks might even don a fresh dusting of snow some morning. Thankfully, the extended duration of this pattern change should provide a needed respite from the seemingly unending heat of 2015. The drought is far from over, but the next seven days will be a beneficial step in the right direction.
