An influx of cold Canadian air is possible next week for areas east of the Cascades. This is a rather new development, and temperatures could ultimately be warmer than recent model solutions indicate. However, the trend has been toward colder conditions, which suggests that the threat cannot be ignored. Potential impacts include much colder temperatures and gusty northeasterly winds, as surface high pressure over Alberta shifts into Montana early next week and forces very dry and cool air into Washington.

Right now, it appears that eastern areas may bottom out around next Wednesday/Thursday with highs in the 30s to low 40s, and lows in the 20s, and perhaps a few teens. Areas west of the Cascades, especially around the western Columbia Gorge and into Vancouver, could see strong east winds early next week. Even as the air mass moderates later next week, decreasing winds and strengthening inversions may at least temporarily stifle the warm up in the lowlands.

Otherwise, Saturday should be calm and dry as a result of high pressure temporarily residing over the region. Morning fog is likely in some areas, although many locations will be sunny by afternoon. A passing disturbance on Sunday will give rain to western areas and westerly winds to eastern areas. Next week, high pressure will rebuild for a period of dry weather. A switch to westerly flow could herald the return of light rain later next week in the west, although it may stay dry for the entire week. Aside from the potential return to unsettled weather late in the period, the biggest forecast questions involve the extent of fog or low clouds on Saturday, and the magnitude and persistence of the cool air that infiltrates Washington next week.
