Very Warm This Weekend; Cooler Early Next Week

Summer will return in full force this weekend, as a strong ridge of high pressure assumes residence across the region. Dry offshore flow on Saturday may allow western Washington, and perhaps even the coast, to experience the hottest weather in the state. Given the time of year, this mini heat wave will not be long lasting or extreme by any measure. Also, temperatures should still cool at night given the very dry air mass, which will mitigate the potential day-time discomfort. As the heat spreads inland on Sunday, eastern areas will see even warmer temperatures.

A moist marine layer could return to the coast as early as later on Sunday, although day-time heat relief is likely to be delayed until Monday for interior western areas. The passage of an anemic weather system will also give a slight chance of showers to the west on Monday. Some breezes and cooler air will eventually infiltrate eastern Washington on Tuesday. However, a resurgent ridge will shift the pattern back toward warmer and sunny conditions later next week. Similar to this weekend, it appears that western areas will see the most significant warm up. One wildcard is the potential for a back door cold front to brush eastern Washington around next Thursday, which could briefly deliver a shot of cooler and drier air to that region.
