A complex and atypical weather period awaits us in the coming days. This weekend, Washington will be influenced by a cool northwesterly air flow. A chance of showers exists on Saturday, especially in northwestern areas, though the better chance for lowland precipitation will hold off until Saturday night and Sunday. A back door cold front will allow cool, continental air to start seeping into northeastern areas on Sunday. Snow is possible in the northern part of the state on Sunday, although there could be a large temperature gradient between mild air in the south and colder air in the north.

Washington will find itself in a meteorological squeeze play next week, as a blocking ridge retreats to western Canada or eastern Alaska. At the same time, a subtropical jet stream over the Pacific will inch toward us from the southwest, while arctic air spills into the Northern Plains. Weak weather systems and light precipitation are possible early next week, although most areas will be dry for much of the time. While western areas may be quite mild, chilly air banked against the Cascade east slopes will keep central and eastern Washington fairly cool early next week. After a possible break around the middle of next week, more active weather is possible later next week and into next weekend, as the southern jet steers storms closer to Washington.
