Cool and Dry This Weekend; Additional Weak Weather Systems for Next Week

Although the calendar says that it's a New Year, the same old weather regime should persist for at least the next 7 days. The non-descript, “dirty ridge” pattern that has lingered since early to mid December will continue into next week. Despite the moderate chances for light precipitation beginning early next week, drier than normal conditions are nonetheless anticipated in the coming days.

This weekend, dry and cool conditions are expected, as high pressure builds into the region. However, the ridge will flatten early next week, which should allow a couple of weak and splitting disturbances to pass through Washington. As a result, clouds and rain could arrive in western Washington as early as Monday night or Tuesday morning. While western areas are likely to experience light rain by the middle of next week, any precipitation in eastern areas is very uncertain, and significant amounts are unlikely. While strong winds are not expected, there should at least be sufficient mixing next week to prevent widespread stagnant conditions. By later next week and next weekend, more notable rainfall is possible in western areas, along with warmer temperatures. However, it is unclear whether any potent or organized storms will pass through the state during this somewhat more active period. In any case, a return to drier and relatively uneventful weather appears likely during the week two time period.
