Storm to Bring Windy and Milder Weather Early Next Week

A pattern change will occur this weekend, as the ridge of high pressure that had been over the region weakens and departs. An energetic southwesterly jet stream will push into the area early next week, before the flow turns to northwesterly later in the week. A weak weather system will impact Washington this weekend, bringing light rain to western Washington and light snow or mix to areas east of the Cascades. A stronger system will move across the area early next week, bringing more significant rain to western Washington, along with a chance of rain, or possibly brief mixed precipitation, to eastern Washington. The rain and snowmelt early next week could lead to sharp rises on rivers as well. This system will bring strong enough southwesterly winds to scour out any remaining cold air in eastern Washington. With the inversion broken, temperatures should rise into the 40s and 50s in south central and southeastern Washington around next Tuesday or Wednesday, before colder and somewhat drier air filters back into the region late in the week. Following the cold frontal passage, conditions will cool down in western Washington and the mountains by Wednesday, and then later in the week east of the Cascades. In the mountains, snow levels near pass elevation this weekend will rise rapidly on Monday morning before falling again around mid week, with snow showers returning to the mountains by late Tuesday or Wednesday.
