Frost Possible This Weekend; Much Warmer Early Next Week

Nic Loyd, Meteorologist, 509-786-9357

Saturday and Sunday mornings will feature a good chance of frost in the colder locations of central Washington, especially around the Yakima Valley at locations such as Moxee. Many other areas will have lows in the mid 30s to low 40s. Despite warming conditions higher in the atmosphere on Saturday, low dew point temperatures and increasingly stable conditions will allow Sunday morning to potentially be as cold as Saturday morning. Otherwise, frost chances are low for the remainder of the period.

It will be dry this weekend, with warming day time temperatures that will be around normal by Sunday. It will be very warm and dry early next week, with above normal temperatures that should peak around Tuesday. Temperatures will warm into the 70s and low 80s early next week in central Washington, as lows climb into the 40s. There may be another period of large temperature gradients over western Washington from Sunday through early next week during the warm weather. The gradients will lessen once the marine air pushes into western Washington around Tuesday night. Clouds and brief but notable cooling should occur mid week from west to east, along with a chance of showers in western Washington. There is some indication that warmer and drier weather will again return at the end of the period, and last into the middle of the month. Overall, it will be a dry week, with above normal temperatures on Monday and Tuesday that will trend (briefly) back to normal around mid week.

Temperatures
  • Below normal on Saturday.
  • Above normal early next week.
  • Near normal for mid next week.

Rainfall
  • Very little expected.
  • Most likely to occur around mid week in western Washington.

Wind
  • Generally light for the weekend and early next week.
  • Windier around the middle of next week.
  • Less wind expected again late in the week.

Frost Risk Summary
  • Saturday and Sunday morning: Lows in the upper 20s to low 30s in cold areas, with mid 30s to low 40s in most other areas.
  • Next week: Likely safe all areas beginning on Monday morning.

Climate Note: The combination of historical data and the current forecast suggest that this weekend will likely be the last period of widespread or significant frost concern in Washington this spring.
