Tier 3 Placement Guidance

Regional Site (National Weather Service Standards)

  • Temperature sensor should be mounted approximately 5 feet above the ground surface.
  • Grass ground cover
  • Avoid irrigation spray
  • At least 100 feet from paved surface
  • No closer than four times the height of any obstruction (tree, building, etc…)
    • E.g. at least 40 feet away from a 10-foot tall orchard canopy.

Optional sensor placement (regional site or in-field):

  • Leaf wetness – approximately 5 feet above the ground surface
  • Soil sensors – standard 2- or 8-inch insertion depth, contact AWN for guidance

In-field (perennial crops):

To better represent actual cropping conditions, perennial crop producers may want to place stations in or near crop canopies. Guidance for optimum station placement is evolving based upon ongoing research. If your crop is not discussed below, contact AgWeatherNet (weather@wsu.edu) for guidance.

  • Guidance for all perennial crops:
  • Minimize station shading for weather stations with solar radiation sensors. For tall canopies, place stations at south end of block.
    • Passively shielded temp/RH sensors should be placed on north side of trellis poles, potentially with a small porous shade netting "tent" to provide additional shade.
  • Minimize risk of station damage during field operations.
  • Keeping in mind that elevation is a primary control on local weather variability, (a) select a station site that is representative or (b) if frost mitigation is a priority, place your station at a particularly low/cold location.
  • Apples:
  • 2-D trellis. Place full weather station at the top of a trellis pole in a representative or particularly cold block (if frost mitigation is a priority).
  • V-trellis. Place the station on a pole installed in the middle of the V, with the temperature sensor at a height of 6 feet. The goal is to capture within canopy conditions while minimizing shading. A narrower "V" may require higher station placement.
  • For either 2-D or V trellis, a supplemental or alternative METER Atmos 14 Temp/RH sensor can be placed within the canopy—at a standard 5-foot height. Be sure to shade by placing on north side of trellis pole and/or constructing a small, porous shade netting tent.
  • Cherries:
  • Diverse cherry training systems make specifying station placement more difficult. Use apple orchard guidance where relevant, or contact AWN staff at weather@wsu.edu for assistance.
  • Grapes:
  • Place station near your vineyard but at a location where it doesn’t have to be moved or risk damage during field operations. Meteorological conditions inside a drip-irrigated vineyard will be very similar to those immediately outside of the vineyard.
